Galatians 6 Should We Bear One Another’s Burdens? Absolutely!

We are stronger together!
We are stronger together!

1Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.2Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.3For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.4But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.5For each will have to bear his own load. 6Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.9And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.10So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.11See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. 12It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.13For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.14But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

15For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.16And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

I wanted to expound on this passage of Scripture because this advice from Paul is timeless, and we all need to hear it again and again. The world would be a better place if we all understood and practiced these Godly principles.

I think it’s interesting that the Scripture starts out by addressing brothers. It meant something different when it was written then it does now. Brothers indicates a familial relationship among believers. This emphasizes unity and equality within the Body of Messiah. The early church’s understanding of church as a family, transcending ethnic and social boundaries. This isn’t just a call to help others but a divine mandate to live out the love of Messiah.  It also means that believers have a responsibility toward one another, rooted in love and mutual care. This is incredible and should be that way today but unfortunately, it’s not.  But I love the context of this. Today we can call others our brothers and sisters and consider them family! It may not have the traditional family meaning it once did. Verse 1 goes on to say that if anyone is caught in any transgression, he should be restored in a spirit of gentleness. The community’s role in addressing these situations should be one of restoration not condemnation.  The goal of addressing sin should be restoration, not punishment. It’s a process of healing and making whole again. This lines up with Messiah’s redemptive work on the cross. He came to reconcile and make things whole and complete again. This passage reminds us to watch ourselves and our own vulnerability to sin. We must constantly examine ourselves, so we don’t get overconfident. We need God’s grace to avoid falling into temptation. I also want to add here that we should be constantly self-reflecting. We may not have to be called on by a brother or sister if we are self-reflecting.

Verse 8 offers a profound truth: When we sow to please the Spirit, our daily choices are seeds we plant, and they determine the harvest we will reap! By focusing on spiritual growth and aligning our actions with God’s will, we invest in an eternal reward that far surpasses any earthly gain.

Verse 9 encourages us to not grow weary in helping others or in well doing. It’s easy to become discouraged when our efforts seem unnoticed, but God promises a harvest in His perfect timing. Let’s keep pressing on knowing our labor in the Lord is not in vain

Paul concludes his letter to the Galatians emphasizing the centrality of the cross in the life of the believer. Paul mentions that he writes in large letters. I believe to make sure his point is taken with importance and significance. He also wanted to make sure the Galatians understood the seriousness of the issue at hand.

He brings up the circumcision issue, which is very important because there were leaders pressuring the Galatians to get circumcised as a requirement for salvation. These leaders missed the essence of the faith of Yeshua by focusing on an outward action like circumcision. Paul made it clear that salvation comes through faith in Yeshua alone not through the adherence to outward rituals. Salvation is so simple, yet people want to add to it! What truly matters is being a NEW creation in Messiah.   2 Corinthians 5:17 The old is gone and the new is here.

Finally, Paul concludes by pronouncing peace and mercy on all who live by the rule of the new creation. He highlights the spiritual unity of Jews and Gentiles in the family of God referring to them as the Israel of God.  This is where Paul explains that true circumcision is a matter of the heart by the spirit and not by the written code. Salvation is by grace through faith in Yeshua. He warns against legalism and emphasizes the transformative power of the gospel in making believers new creations in Messiah.

This goes back to my original question- do we bear one another’s burdens?  I believe if we are true disciples and believers in Messiah, the answer is an overwhelming yes. Working out our salvation is indeed a process.  Which means we should be growing and changing more into His image every day. That takes time and growth in our lifetime. But we should always be striving to be more like Him every day in our words, and actions. Let’s not grow weary in doing well.
